What is a peak pose in yoga?
Many classes are built around one pose that everything else leads up to. Here's what that means and how to choose one.
Short answer: a peak pose is the most demanding pose in a class, the one the whole sequence prepares for. It usually comes about two thirds of the way through, when students are warmest, and is followed by counterposes and a cool-down.
Why build toward a peak
A peak gives a class direction. Instead of a list of poses, every pose in the warm-up and build has a reason: it prepares a body part the peak will need. Students feel the logic even if they couldn't name it, and the peak feels achievable because they've already done its ingredients.
What makes a good peak pose
- Reachable today for most of the room, with an option for everyone else.
- Built from clear ingredients: you can name what it needs (open hips, strong core, mobile shoulders) and prepare each one.
- Taught as a ladder: stages students can climb as far as feels right.
