Yoga counterposes: which pose follows which
A counterpose brings the body back toward neutral after working hard in one direction. Use this table when you plan, and keep counterposes mild: their job is to neutralise, not to start a new effort.
Short answer: after backbends, hug the knees in and twist gently. After deep forward folds, a mild backbend like sphinx or bridge. After arm balances, release the wrists and rest in child's pose. After twists, return to neutral in a symmetrical pose. Keep every counterpose milder than the pose before it.
Counterpose table
| After… | Teach… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Backbends (camel, wheel, bow) | Knees to chest, supine twist, gentle seated forward fold | Releases the low back after extension; avoid jumping into a deep fold |
| Deep forward folds | Sphinx, cobra, bridge | Gentle extension after long flexion |
| Twists | A neutral, symmetrical pose like child's pose or a seated forward fold | Lets the spine return to centre |
| Arm balances (crow, side crow) | Wrist stretches with fingers pointing back, child's pose | Releases wrists and shoulders |
| Inversions (headstand, shoulderstand) | Child's pose; fish after shoulderstand | Neck and blood pressure settle before moving on |
| Core work (boat, plank holds) | Sphinx or bridge | Lengthens the front body after flexion |
| Hip openers (pigeon, lizard) | A symmetrical pose like seated forward fold or happy baby | Rebalances the pelvis after one-sided work |
| Long standing sequences | Wide-legged forward fold, downward dog | Rests the legs and lengthens the back |
| Hamstring stretches | Bridge or locust | Engages the back of the legs after lengthening them |
Three rules
- Milder than before. A counterpose is a reset, not a second peak.
- Neutral in between. Between opposite extremes (a deep backbend and a deep fold), pass through a neutral shape first.
- Both sides even. After one-sided work, finish with something symmetrical.
The yoga flow generator adds counterposes after the peak automatically. For the bigger picture, see how to sequence a yoga class.
Questions
What is a counterpose in yoga?
A counterpose is a gentle pose taught after an intense one to bring the spine and joints back toward neutral, for example a mild forward fold or twist after a deep backbend.
What is a good counterpose for backbends?
After backbends, lie on the back and hug the knees in, then do a gentle supine twist or a mild seated forward fold. Avoid going straight from a deep backbend into a deep forward fold.
Do you always need a counterpose?
Not after every pose, but after any intense or sustained work in one direction, such as a backbend series, arm balances, inversions or long holds in one shape, a counterpose makes the transition kinder.
